Evaluation of acute toxicity and anti-inflammatory effect of alcoholic extract from Ceiba Pentandra leaves in experimental animals

Abstract
Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn., commonly known as the Gon tree, has been traditionally used in folk medicine to treat inflammatory disorders. However, scientific evidence regarding the safety and anti-inflammatory efficacy of its leaf extract remains scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the acute toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of a 70% ethanol extract of C. pentandra leaves in Swiss albino mice. The extract was prepared using maceration with 70% ethanol. The anti-inflammatory activity was determined using the carrageenan-induced paw edema model, with diclofenac sodium (5 mg/kg) as the reference drug. Paw volume was measured before inflammation induction, at 3 and 24 hours post-carrageenan injection. The extract exhibited no signs of acute oral toxicity at doses up to 19.08 g/kg. At 0.436 g/kg, the extract significantly reduced paw edema by 20.82% and 34.86% at 3 and 24 hours, respectively (p < 0.01), with no significant difference compared to diclofenac sodium. These findings support the potential of C. pentandra leaves as a safe and effective natural anti-inflammatory agent.
